Julianne Hough Talks About Her 'Shame' Over Past Blackface Controversy

Amid the ongoing protests in wake of George Floyd's murder, Julianne Hough has spoken out about her past blackface controversy, where she dressed as Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba) from Orange Is The New Black in 2013.

On Saturday (June 6), Hough, who recently announced her separation from Brooks Laich, broke down with the "shame" for what she did. As pet ET Canada, the star was hosting an Instagram Live workout and spoke about the incident. After admitting that this moment isn't about her, Hough said she felt "paralyzed" to speak up, but confessed that her misstep can help others make a difference.

Elsewhere during the Live session, the actress encouraged her viewers to admit their shame and guilt, as well as a bigger call to action to speak up. If you head over to her Instagram account, you’ll notice that the star has shared a number of posts to make it clear that she and her workout brand, KINGRY, back the Black Lives Matter movement.

However, this isn’t the first time that Hough has spoken about her controversial Halloween look. "I really had no idea what I was doing, and it was all out of fun and respect for the character," she told Allure in 2015. "I don’t even know how to talk about it because it’s such a sensitive topic. It makes me so sad to think that I was that dumb. I learned a big lesson."
