Just like the rest of the world, Prince William and Kate Middleton had strong reactions to the revelations made during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge apparently weren't aware of the full extent of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's struggles within the Palace.
“William and Kate were in total shock after hearing what Meghan and Harry said,” a source told Us Weekly. “What shocked them the most was Meghan’s suicidal thoughts and their quotes on a royal family member mentioning Archie’s skin color. William and Kate knew about some of their troubles with palace aides, but nothing to this extent.”
William and Kate reportedly “feel horrible” for Harry and Meghan after watching the interview, however, they “still wish” the Sussexes “had not tried to take down the royal family” on TV. “William and Kate feel that these conversations could have been made in private,” the source explained.
While Harry commented on his strained relationship with William, Meghan opened up about her relationship with Kate. Though Kate was welcoming to Meghan when she joined the family, Meghan claims one of the most circulated rumors about her and Kate—that Meghan made Kate cry during a disagreement over flower girl dresses—had been reported backward. As Meghan tells it, Kate was the one to make Meghan cry in the incident.
Kate reportedly “feels that there was a misunderstanding" between her and Meghan. The sisters-in-law “were trying to figure out flower girl dresses” ahead of Meghan and Harry's wedding and that “it should not have been such a huge point of contention.”
“Kate is caught between a rock and a hard place,” another source told Us Weekly. “She wants to speak up and help the crown rebuild their image, but she is not one for confrontation nor escalation. Kate will eventually speak out about some of the bombshells dropped by Meghan, especially the crying incident.”
“She didn’t like that she was called out by name when many of the other members of the royal family were not,” the source added. “Kate also did not like the implications that she and other members of the royal family were jealous of Meghan, that was never the case.”
