Ditch The Multitasking Life and Switch to Monotasking Instead

Hustle Culture is a term many of us are familiar with. The idea that we need to go go go in order to be productive has been apart of work culture in America and being able to multitask was seen as a necessity to be successful. Now studies are saying that multitasking is hurting more than it's helping. Studies have found that multitasking is actually bad for productivity, as well as health and relationships.

According to Thatcher Wine, author of The Twelve Monotasks: Do One Thing at A Time to Do Everything Better, our brains actually aren't wired for multitasking. She states that multitasking "overloads our brains and causes a significant amount of stress" and that "studies have shown that tasks take longer and we make more mistakes than if we had done one thing at a time."

Here are some signs that multitasking may be negatively impacting you:

  • You struggle to pay attention to the task at hand.
  • You're susceptible to distractions.
  • You frequently make mistakes or misunderstand an assignment.
  • You feel burnt out.
  • You often forget details from interactions.
  • Your interactions with others don't feel as meaningful.
  • Others sometimes ask for your attention.

If some of those signs seem familiar to you, you may want to work on these mono tasking skills to improve your focus:

  • Turn off phone notifications or put your phone in airplane mode.
  • Keep your phone in another room or in your bag when spending time with others.
  • Close your email window.
  • Change your Slack status to "focusing" and pause notifications.
  • Schedule time for deep focus.
  • Set a time limit for how long you want to focus on a task.
  • Identify other common distraction san dremove/mitigate them as best you can.
  • Practice meditation/mindfulness, yoga, and deep breathing.
