How Often Should You Shower? Dermatologist Weighs In

Do you really need to shower everyday? I sometimes shower twice a day, is it really as bad for my skin as people online say? What about people that shower every other day? Are they any less clean than daily showerers? Dermatologist Dr. Shari Sperling, co-founder of Sperling Dermatology, says it's not that simple. There's actually no one rule that fits all and depends more on you individual skin type.

Obviously if you stanky, take a dang shower. After that consider your skin type. Dr. Sperling says that hose with dry or sensitive skin benefit from less frequent showers. Those without these skin types are good for daily showers if they'd like, though it's not necessary for maintaining good hygiene in most cases.

What about people that prefer to take a weekly shower? My instant reaction is ew, but according to Dr. Sperling, that may be all it takes to keep yourself clean as long as you're not getting sweaty or dirty and washing your armpits and genitals daily. Really, how often you shower depends on how your skin responds to the frequency, or infrequency, of your shower routine. For instance, Dr. Sperling recommends that those with skin conditions such as eczema shower every other day. If you don't have a skin condition but find that your skin is often dry or itchy, you're probably over showering as taking too many showers or scrubbing too vigorously can strip the body of its natural oils.
